In 1997, ‘Deep Blue’, a computer developed by IBM, defeated world champion chess player Garry Kasparov. 227 years prior to this, a Hungarian civil servant, Wolfgang von Kempelen, created what later became known as ‘the Mechanical Turk’. The ‘Turk’ (so called because of the Turkish style robes and turban worn by the life-size model) appeared to be a fully automated chess-playing machine, capable of playing a strong game of chess against a human opponent. The machine was in fact an elaborate hoax; the moves were made by a small man hidden inside the box. At the time of its creation, the technology to create a working version of such a machine did not exist. Today, it does.

The aim of this project and the creation of the IDEA GENERATOR 3000 is to question the limitations of technology. Computers can only perform specific tasks that we program them to do. ‘Deep Blue’ did what it was programmed to do; win a game of chess. But the computer itself could not do anything other than this. The match was described as being a battle of man vs. machine, but in fact, it was man vs. man. It was Kasparov vs. the five IBM research scientists and one international chess grandmaster who created ‘Deep Blue’.

Increasingly, jobs that were once carried out by humans are now carried out by robots, particularly in factories. Occupations that require any kind of elaborate thinking are assumed to be safe from automation. The concept of a machine capable of generating original thoughts and ideas and potentially replacing the roles of people in creative industries such as graphic design seems inconceivable today. But who’s to say what might happen in the next 227 years...

Thanks to Elliott Barker for his unique demonstration.

The website ‘Chatroulette’ randomly pairs its users and enables interactions with strangers via webcam. It offers a unique platform for exhibitionism, an activity frequently explored by its primarily male users. It encourages highly judgmental behaviour, allowing users to instantly ‘next’ someone based solely on their appearance. It allows users to remain anonymous, aside from the image they display of themselves via their webcam. This image is the only relatively accurate depiction of one partner to another and any additional information that may be revealed cannot be trusted to be true.

This piece is a three-dimensional representation of the site. It aims to replicate and intensify the uneasy feelings experienced when being viewed by an online stranger. The images of four male users encountered on the site have been pixelated and applied to rotating wooden ‘pixels’. The distortion of these images makes the human figure less distinguishable, and the content may not be immediately clear. But after taking a step back, a human presence becomes identifiable. The large scale and enduring format of the piece contrasts the key appeal of the site; its ephemeral nature.

The piece retains the user’s ability to ‘next’ by sliding the handle along, but the partners are now always present, even if they are not directly visible.

With thanks to my local friendly carpenter, Edwin Lock

Also , Mia Warner for the beautiful demonstration.

The county of Essex is frequently portrayed in a negative way in the media. Programmes such as ITV's 'The Only Way is Essex' lead its viewers to believe that the featured characters and their lifestyles are representative of the whole population of Essex. This infamous quote from ex 'TOWIE' star Amy Childs, is carved in to a map of the county, obscuring its features and providing an incomplete representation of the area.

Typographic exploration of the book 'Flatland, a Romance of Many Dimensions' by Edwin A. Abbott. The design is based around the view from the different dimensions discussed in the book. The narrator is a square from ‘Flatland’ (a two-dimensional land). His view is that of a thin line. Whenever Flatland is referenced to in the book, only a thin slither of type is shown, as would be the view in Flatland. Whenever ‘Lineland’ is mentioned, the type is shown through a circular grid, as the view from Lineland (a one-dimensional land) is only a dot. When ‘Spaceland’ (the three dimensional world) is spoken of, the text is shown in its entirety. And finally, when Pointland (no dimensions) is briefly mentioned, the text cannot be seen at all. Flatland is colourless. This is reflected in the neutral appearance of the book. When colour is briefly touched upon in one chapter, the corresponding type is displayed using a gradient of all the colours mentioned. The sleeve acts as a key.

Newspapers are thrown away and replaced on a daily basis. Yesterday's newspaper is considered outdated. In this project, a comparison was drawn between newspapers and the Bible. Written thousands of years ago, the Bible continues to be referred to by many who still consider its content to be relevant. Six different newspapers were bound using a traditionally biblical aesthetic. The content which would otherwise be discarded is given a new sense of importance. The six newspapers used were each purchased on the 11/11/11.

With this in consideration, the design of the set aims to subtly hint at the cruel techniques employed when producing various food products derived from animals by disguising them as decorative patterns, a less obvious route than the use of shocking imagery.
